5th Street Intersection To Close, on or about March 14th

On or about March 14th, CSX expects to temporarily close the 5th/6th Street SE intersection with Virginia Avenue for approximately 3-4 months. The closure will allow removal of the existing temporary bridge deck and final street restoration. The timing for the closure and work is dependent on favorable weather conditions. CSX will provide updates as the work progresses.

The 6th Street off-ramp from I-695 will remain open while this work is underway.

Traffic will be severely limited on 5th Street, north of K Street while the 5th/6th Street intersection is closed. All through-traffic wishing to reach destinations north of Virginia Avenue will be detoured to 7th Street. Only vehicles wishing to access residences in the 900 block of 5th Street, including the Capper Center, should enter the block. All other vehicles should follow detour signs to L Street and 7th Street for travel north of Virginia Avenue. There will be additional parking restrictions on 5th Street while this work is underway.

While the intersection is closed, detour signs will be placed south of Virginia Avenue on K Street, L Street, 5th Street, 7th Street, and on the westbound lanes of Virginia Avenue (north of I-695), to direct drivers around the closure. A pathway across the intersection will remain open for pedestrians throughout the period that the street is closed.

Illustrations of the roadway configurations during the closing can be found here on the project website. Signs, barrels, barriers and other traffic control measures will be deployed to guide drivers through the area.

CSX urges all drivers to use caution through this intersection and others affected by the Virginia Avenue Tunnel project.

4th Street Intersection To Close, on or about March 14th

On or about March 14th, CSX expects to temporarily close the 4th Street SE intersection with Virginia Avenue for approximately 3-4 months. The closure will allow removal of the existing temporary bridge deck, completion of a portion of the roof of the second new Virginia Avenue Tunnel and final street restoration. The timing for the closure and work is dependent on favorable weather conditions. CSX will provide updates as the work progresses.

Pedestrian access will be maintained across the intersection throughout this process. The east side driveway to the Capitol Quarter townhomes will be switched to the original alignment from Virginia Avenue. Drivers will be directed to drive down Virginia Avenue to go north- or south-bound on 3rd Street.

Detour signs, barrels and other traffic management tools will be in place to guide drivers wishing to travel north or south across Virginia Avenue on 3rd Street. Southbound traffic on 4th Street will be detoured to turn right on G Street SE, left on 3rd Street, left on I Street and right on 4th Street. These detours are detailed here on the project website.

Saturday Work, March 3rd

CSX expects to conduct construction-related work on Saturday, March 3rd, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. at locations throughout the Virginia Avenue Tunnel project area. Activities on Saturday may include backfilling of existing excavation areas, demolition, removal of bracing, and concrete construction activities. CSX does not expect any of this to be disruptive, and will implement mitigation measures to reduce the impact this work may have on neighbors. Small groups of workers may be present on the site throughout the weekend to monitor the status of pumps and other essential equipment, but activity will be very limited and is not expected to be disruptive.
